Lithuania allocates humanitarian aid to children in Iraq and to fight Ebola

Paying due regard to relevant needs of humanitarian aid in the world, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania decided to voluntarily contribute 26,000 EUR of international humanitarian assistance to help children in Iraq through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and 10,000 EUR for the World Food Program’s operation to help prevent the spread of Ebola haemorrhagic fever.

The rapidly growing humanitarian crisis in Iraq broke out after militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) terrorist group occupied broad lands of Iraq and Syria. In August 2014, the United Nations designated the highest level of emergency for the humanitarian crisis in Iraq, which put hundreds of thousands of Iraqis in urgent need of help. 1.8 million Iraqis have left homeless.

The largest ever outbreak of Ebola began in March 2014 in Guinea. It has since spread to Sierra Leone and Liberia. The three African countries declared a state of emergency. The countries struggle to control the Ebola outbreak that has already claimed over 3,000 lives.  The UN said that nearly $1.0 billion dollars was needed to fight the outbreak.
