Lithuania and Sweden to help schools in eastern Ukraine

On 17 November in Kyiv, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Margot Wallström signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support educational institutions in eastern Ukraine. The document provides for an exchange of students, teacher training and improving the conditions of learning in schools in eastern Ukraine.

In accordance with this Memorandum of Understanding, Lithuania and Sweden will allocate EUR 220,000 for the implementation of joint projects in this field in the short run.

In 2014-2015, Lithuania allocated EUR 730,000 of assistance to Ukraine in the field of education, while Sweden donated EUR 765,000.

A group of 15 pupils and a teacher from Donetsk and Luhansk came to Lithuania last week to study for an entire school year.
