The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator Kyung-Wha Kang visited Lithuania on 11 and 12 November.
During the visit, she took part in an informal meeting of the of the Council’s Working Group on Humanitarian Aid and Food Aid (COHAFA), which was chaired by Lithuania. The official also attended a conference on international humanitarian assistance, co-organised by Vilnius University, the International Association of Universities (NOHA) which aims to increase professionalism in the humanitarian sector, and the European Commission.
In Vilnius, the UN official also held meetings with the Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Rolandas Kriščiūnas, the Vice-Minister of the Interior Žimantas Pacevičius, and members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Seimas (Parliament).
In order to effectively contribute to the work of the Security Council, Lithuania must have a good understanding of all aspects of humanitarian assistance provision and cooperate closely with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
