New opportunities for small towns of Chernigov region to increase energy saving

On June 11, 2013, an educational workshop on the Covenant of Mayors was held at the Chernigov Educational and Methodical Center for the representatives of local governments, district administrations and NGOs from Chernigov region of Ukraine. Attendees were provided with information on additional opportunities to implement energy saving policies.

Participants from Chernigov region now have access to the knowledge and resources that the city-signatories from European Union have. The possibility to co-financing the development of energy-saving projects is relevant to small towns of Chernigov region, which are currently undergoing planning activities towards the signature of Covenant of Mayors.

Covenant signatories reach a common goal: provide its citizens an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable living environment, ensuring affordable energy services for living. One of the requirements of the Covenant of Mayors is an elaboration of Baseline Emission Inventory and Sustainable Energy Action Plan to reduce emissions of CO2.

Workshop is a part of nongovernmental organization Center “Dobrochyn” implemented project “Sustainable Energy Planning: International Cooperation & Best Practices towards the Covenant of Mayors”. The project also focuses on studying the Lithuanian experience, in particular the practice of city-signers, their benefits, good practices and lessons learnt regarding the implementation of Covenant of Mayors.

Project is funded by Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
