Project goal

To construct, furnish, and reopen Mahmoodiya Primary School to provide accessible education to Qasrki village residents and residents from surrounding areas.

Project results

On 1 November, the Mahmoodiya Primary School was officially reopened in the Sinjar district of the Nineveh Governorate in northern Iraq. More than 161 students will now have the opportunity to study at the newly built six-classroom school, which is equipped with all the necessary educational tools and furniture.

Project’s aim is to help those who, due to difficult conditions, do not have access to education in their home country to acquire education in Lithuania.

Project results
  • 1 visit to Iraq.
  • 1 visit of project partners to Lithuania.
  • Student selection process was completed and 15 students received visas or other relevant documents allowing them to come to Lithuania to study.
  • 10 students' tuition fees and scholarships were effectively used and good academic results were achieved. During their studies, students were involved in volunteering activities and participated in cultural and social projects in the community.
  • All students who graduated from the university got a job (most of them work in international organizations).

Development Cooperation with Iraq

The strategic objectives of Lithuania's development cooperation policy have been determined based on the needs of the Middle East countries (Iraq), the Programme of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, and the priorities of the EU’s Policy.

Sectoral priorities of the development cooperation strategy for the Middle East in 2022‒2025:

1) strengthening administrative and institutional capacity, transferring experience in the area of public sector reforms;

2) sustainable economic development;

3) the elimination of the preconditions for illegal migration.

Aid for Iraq

Lithuania has been implementing development cooperation projects in Iraq since 2006.

In 2006-2021, four development cooperation projects are being implemented with the funds of the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme for 121,7 thousand euros. Support was provided in the areas of education, good governance and rule of law, administrative capacity building.

In 2022, two projects have been implemented in Iraq in the field of education, for which 180 000 euros have been allocated.
